Cold Wax

Why Oil and Cold Wax Medium ?

Traditional oil painting has been done for centuries using oil pigments mixed into linseed oil.

I use oil paint and cold wax medium for most of my art works. Cold wax is a thick paste made of bees wax, turpentine, mineral spirits and oils, mixed into the colour of oil pigment of my choosing. The mixture of oil pigment and cold wax allows me to create thick or thin layers of colour and texture onto my canvas boards. The mixture takes days and sometimes weeks to dry, so there is time to layer, push, pull, lift, scrape, create marks or just play with the paint until the desired effect is achieved. The process of digging into layers and choosing which ones to leave be gives a sense of serendipity, surprise and mystery to the creative process.
